About SCS Formulate

SCS History
The British Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) was formed on 7 October 1948 at the suggestion of Maison G de Navarre. The 23 founder members, chaired by Freddie Wells, were chemists who wanted to meet and discuss their specialist science, to communicate their ideas for R&D and to learn about recent advances in other countries. To develop cosmetic science they realised they needed a professional organisation that would foster a close relationship between members of the profession and facilitate exchanges of information and discussion of controversial subjects at a high scientific level. The SCS was also a founder member of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC).

The SCS has grown steadily and now has around 1000 members, student members and associates drawn from cosmetic science and also from professions allied to the C&T Industry, including perfumery, marketing, packaging, dermatology, toxicology, microbiology and pharmacology. At last year's AGM the society approved a constitutional change reviewing membership grades. This extends membership entitlement to more people working in cosmetic science, making the society more relevant to members and bringing it very much into the 21st century.

The society runs a strong symposia and lecture programme, often working in co-operation with other scientific and industrial organisations. Evening lectures and events in London are currently held at the King's Fund but there are also two regional development groups, North and Wales & West, which organise regional lectures and other events so members from all over the UK can get involved. This November, the seventh SCS Formulate will be held in Telford. This popular event successfully mixes workshops and supplier presentations with an extensive supplier exhibition.

The society also has a high profile education programme, including the Principles and Practices in Cosmetic Science and the Diploma in Cosmetic Science. The internationally renowned Diploma is run as a distance learning course and is accredited by de Montfort University. The society also publishes the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in conjunction with the Société Française de Cosmétologie.
